NE Broadway Community Walk

On Tuesday, November 8th, Go Lloyd was invited to participate in a site visit along NE Broadway with business owners, the Lloyd Community Association (LCA), and staff from the City of Portland’s new Public Environmental Management Office (PEMO). The boundaries of the Lloyd Enhanced Service District, and the three Lloyd-specific nonprofit organizations, end just before Broadway, leaving a gap in services at the north of the district. Businesses along NE Broadway face the same difficulties as those in Lloyd, Downtown, and city-wide: cleanliness, safety, and vandalism.

The group walked from business to business to speak with managers and owners about the main issues their stores face. With the momentum of these organizations and engaged community members, there are many solutions available to support our neighbors on NE Broadway. Potential solutions discussed on this visit include installation of murals with anti-graffiti coating, adding tree lighting, and connecting with local social service providers to assist individuals in crisis in the area.

Together, we will be able to pool our resources and improve the vitality of the NE Broadway retail corridor. Go Lloyd is pleased to be part of the conversation and is looking forward to making continued improvements with LCA, PEMO, and the NE Broadway community.

Meet Maitri

Maitri Dirmeyer works in the Lloyd neighborhood and recently won Go Lloyd’s network prize for the 2022 Get There Challenge. We asked her some questions about her cycling journey. Read on, you may find yourself inspired to start bike commuting, just like Maitri.

Do you ride your bike to work? For shopping or visiting friends? For recreation or sport?

I occasionally ride my bike to work. I’m still mostly teleworking. I regularly ride my bike for short trips to personal appointments and local events. I also ride for recreation and fitness. I’m an all-around/all season cyclist.

If you ride to work, how many miles is your commute?

Around 8 miles one way, or 16 miles roundtrip.

Why did you start riding? What was the motivation?

I’ve been riding off and on since childhood and mainly for recreation. I really started riding 4 years ago. I had been driving to the Park and Ride, and one day (after not being able to find a parking spot) I decided then and there that I would stop driving there and instead ride my bike and lock it in the secure bike parking cage at the Park and Ride before boarding the MAX and transferring to a bus. Prior to that I occasionally rode for recreation and frequently used BIKETOWN for short trips in town during and after my workday.

What were some barriers or obstacles you had to overcome in order to start bike commuting? How did you overcome them?

Proper gear, route familiarity, and confidence. To overcome them I researched and invested in proper gear including good lights, rain jacket, rain chaps, rain pants, waterproof gloves, under helmet beanie, bootie covers, and waterproof backpack pannier. I also researched and familiarized myself with good routes using Google Maps, Ride with GPS, Strava, and PBOT Biking maps. And most importantly I got out there and consistently rode, which in turn built my confidence and I’ve kept with it ever since.

Do you have any stories about riding to share that are surprising, funny, or educational?

Yes, many! I love Pedalpalooza and I am continuously inspired by the joyful, creative, welcoming, and inclusive rides our awesome cycling community hosts every summer (2022 had over 800 rides!).

Steptember: A Month of Movement

Go Lloyd kicked off Steptember 2022 with our guided Art Walk, where we got the chance to view local artist, Jeremy Nichols, paint the new mural on the Metro garage (located at NE 7th Avenue and Lloyd Boulevard) while chatting with the muralist.

Next up was the Historic Places Walk, where we were joined by Oregon Walks Executive Director, Ashton Simpson. We were treated with a pleasant surprise when the current owners of the historic Gov. George Chamberlain House in Irvington gracious let us enter their front yard. We observed the Victorian architecture up close and admired the giant Beech tree in the southeast corner of the yard. This tree was gifted to Chamberlain’s daughter, Carrie (herself the first Rose Festival Queen in 1907) as a seedling from George Washington’s garden at Mt. Vernon.

All month long our Holladay Park Cleanups continued strong, with our diligent park stewards collecting and removing over 75 pounds of garbage.

Halfway through the month, Go Lloyd and The Street Trust came together to host a PARK(ing) Day parklet on NE 6th Avenue and NE Holladay Street. We repurposed the 20 foot by 6 foot parking space to create room to ‘Relax by the MAX’ with coffee, games, and comfy chairs. Many furry companions enjoyed complimentary PARK(ing) Day dog treats while we discussed transportation inspirations and barriers with their humans.

Later in the month on our Water Walk (with a lively and engaged group of attendees), we toured the many water features and fountains within the Lloyd neighborhood. We were joined by liaisons from Community Engagement Liaison Services (CELs), a group currently working with Go Lloyd on a DEI project.

Our last walking tour of the month was the Blumenauer Bridge Walk, which circled back to a location on our Art Walk where we revisited the newly finished Metro garage mural and saw its vibrant, final design. We chatted about adaptive bikes and neighborhood revitalization while we strolled over the Blumenauer Bridge on a summer-like late September afternoon.

Steptember 2022 was full of fun and movement— thank you to all the community members who joined us!

New Lloyd Event Parking District

Beginning September 1, 2022, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will be implementing a new Lloyd Event Parking District on event days with over 10,000 attendees.

When in effect, the Event District will increase the on-street parking rate from $1 an hour to $3 an hour and extend the meter hours up to 10 PM within the Lloyd Event District area (the light blue area on the map below). On non-event days, the on-street parking rate will be $1 an hour with meter hours ending at 6 PM in the entire Lloyd Event District area.

An increase in price for on-street parking encourages people traveling to Lloyd for large events to use public transit, ride bikes, carpool, or take other modes of transportation besides driving alone. (Did you know that an Adult Day Pass for TriMet only costs $5?) This reduces traffic congestion for everyone traveling around Lloyd, lowers vehicle emissions, improving air quality, and makes it easier for residents to find on-street parking.

Lloyd Residents

If you are a full-time resident living within the Lloyd Event District area as of September 1, 2022, you can register one vehicle with PBOT for the Lloyd Event Resident Courtesy List. Through August 31, 2023, vehicles on this courtesy list will avoid receiving a parking meter nonpayment citation when the Event District is in effect.

Eligible residents must complete the Lloyd Event Resident Courtesy List Vehicle Information Form by September 30, 2022 to avoid receiving a citation when the Event District is in effect.

To learn more about the new Lloyd Event Parking District and view the schedule of upcoming Event District days, visit PBOT.

Blumenauer Bridge Opening Day Celebration!

It was great to see so many Portlanders come out in support of yesterday’s Opening Celebration of the Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge!

A HUGE “Thank you!” to Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, Kimberly Branam, and Lloyd’s own, Wade Lange, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), and our partners, the Central Eastside Industrial Council, The Street Trust, Friends of the Green Loop, and Prosper Portland.

Despite the heat, friends and neighbors joined together for a fun, car-free day celebrating our communities and this new, important connection between Lloyd and the Central Eastside. Not only does the Blumenauer Bridge provide a safe and easy crossing for people walking, biking, and rolling between these two great neighborhoods, it will also serve as an important segment of the future Green Loop.

Go Lloyd is proud to have helped fund the construction of this transformative piece of infrastructure and we are happy to underwrite the cost of the pedestrian and bike counter that will be added to the plaza at the north end of the bridge (stay tuned!).

We’d like to extend a special shout out to all those who helped make the Lloyd Block Party at Hassalo Plaza such a success—Friends of the Green Loop, PBOT, Kuto, the Garrett Baxter Quartet, PDX Mobile Bike Repair, The Bookmobile Babe, Staccato Gelato, Yeah Mon Food, FoodiMenus, 40 Mile Loop Land Trust, and especially Congressman Earl Blumenauer and Commissioner Mingus Mapps (Thanks for leading our parade to the bridge, Commissioner Mapps!).

Finally, thank you to all attendees and vendors for sticking it out in the heat and helping to create such a positive atmosphere all day long.

What a fantastic way to celebrate Bridge City’s newest bridge!

Call for Lloyd Vendors!

This is a call for Lloyd businesses, food vendors, and organizations that want to participate in the Blumenauer Bridge Opening Event on July 31, 2022!

The day will include a variety of community-led bike rides and neighborhood activities. New plazas on the north and south sides of the bridge, as well as nearby destinations in Lloyd and Central Eastside, will have pop-up block parties and open streets.

We will be filling up the bridge’s north landing at NE 7th Avenue and NE Lloyd Blvd with vendors and tents—join us!

The event is expected to attract hundreds of attendees and will begin with a press conference and news media at noon.

Contact ophelia@golloyd.org by July 10 to sign up to participate in the event.

The Grand Floral Parade Returns to Lloyd

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Portland Rose Festival’s Grand Floral Parade is back in 2022!

The parade route is shortened this year and will travel exclusively through the Lloyd neighborhood on Sunday, June 11, 2022 from 10 AM to noon.

The parade will begin by traveling through the Memorial Coliseum, continuing along N Broadway and heading east down NE Weidler St. It then travels south down NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., turns left and heads east on Lloyd Blvd., and continues northeast along NE 16th Dr. Finally, the parade will turn west on NE Multnomah St. and disband near the Lloyd Center.

Portlanders can watch the parade by purchasing reserved indoor seats to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, from the street along the route, or via a live telecast of the event on Fox 12 Oregon.

Visit rosefestival.org to purchase tickets and learn more about the Grand Floral Parade.

If you expect to travel into or through Lloyd on the morning of the parade, plan ahead and expect delays.

Bike to Work Day

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our first in-person Bike to Work Day in two years such a success! We were very happy to see so many new and familiar faces supporting cycling in Lloyd.

A special, “Thank you!” to our partners, Left Coast Bicycles - Mobile Bike Repair, BIKETOWN, and Spin e-scooters.

We hope to see you all at more events in the future.

Earl Blumenauer Bridge Preview

Go Lloyd recently organized a preview tour of the new Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge, or “The Earl,” as it is affectionately known. This key piece of infrastructure will provide a much-needed pedestrian and bicycle connection between the Lloyd neighborhood and the Central Eastside, and serve as an important segment of Portland’s Green Loop.

A big “Thank you!” to Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) for giving us this unique opportunity.

We look forward to the bridge opening later this year. Stay tuned for more details.

Bike Parking on Duckworth Dock

The Duckworth Dock received another upgrade just in time for the end of summer!

Lloyd’s own swimming hole is now more accessible with the addition of 10 new bike racks. Human Access Project led the effort, in collaboration with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and Portland Parks & Recreation, with Go Lloyd providing funding to bring this project to fruition. This upgrade is a continuation of our 2020 investment to the Duckworth Dock and we were happy to work with Human Access Project once again to help improve this walkable and bikeable destination within the Lloyd neighborhood.

Grab your helmet and your swimsuit and check it out for yourself! The dock is accessible via the Eastside Esplanade, just south of the Steel Bridge on the east side of the Willamette River.
