Street closures and power washing on NE 1st Ave before mural production began.
Heads up! The left lane of NE 1st Ave between NE Oregon and NE Holladay will be closed until November 15 for a production of a new mural. The mural is attached to the I-84 offramp, behind the Convention Center. Production began on Sunday, October 18, and will last for four weeks, ending on November 15.
A year in the making, preparation for this project required many steps. The wall being a highway offramp wall required the building owner (Oregon Department of Transportation) to approve a Placement of Artwork on State Highway application, facilitated between the Portland Bureau of Transportation and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Once approvals to produce artwork on the State highway were met, permits to block off the left lane for all hours, all days for four weeks required compliance and patience as PBOT navigated the I-5 southbound closure, and summer activations.
After many months of planning, we are happy to announce that production is finally underway! This mural is truly a community-led initiative, with the majority funding from Go Lloyd, and support from the Lloyd Enhanced Services District, the Oregon Convention Center, and a sponsorship from Travel Oregon. This project also could not have been done without facilitation from the Portland Street Art Alliance, and approval from the Regional Arts and Culture Council. We are so excited to finally be in the production phase, and we hope you all enjoy the finished product.
This mural will be completed by the extraordinarily talented, Campographic. If you live in Portland, you’ve probably seen some of his work on the Blanchet House, Alberta Rose Theatre, Bhuna Restaurant, and 20 other exterior buildings (not to mention his interior work). Make sure to follow @campographic on Instagram for daily updates of his progress. Above all, this project could not be done without his dedication, talent, and eye for creating artwork on large walls.
