National Week Without Driving

What if taking the bus, riding your bike, walking to work, or asking for rides wasn't a choice you could make, but a necessity?

If you can drive, and can afford a car, this may not be something you think about often. But for nearly a quarter of people living in the United States—people with disabilities, young people, seniors, and people who can’t afford a car or gas—this is their every day.

The first National Week Without Driving, organized by America Walks and Disability Rights Washington, takes place October 2 to 8, 2023.

Challenge yourself to not drive for one week to better understand the challenges non-drivers face every day of the year. We’re encouraging elected officials, local advocates, and individuals to take part and go one Week Without Driving.

Among the many reasons to participate in the National Week Without Driving are:

  • Understand the challenges that nondrivers face

  • Identify barriers and gaps in the transportation systems

  • Challenge assumptions and misconceptions regarding the transportation needs of the community

  • Make well-informed infrastructure and transportation policy decisions that support the needs of the community

  • Create systemic change in your community that addresses transportation inequity and generates safe streets for all

Learn more and sign up to participate here.

The Steel Bridge will remain open during the entire event, but vehicles entering Old Town from Lloyd using the Steel Bridge will experience delays from 7:15 to 9:45 AM.
