Rose Quarter Construction. We are now less than one month away from the Rose Quarter MAX Improvements project. This week, TriMet’s communications staff began their efforts to inform riders and the public about the project and necessary service disruption. From the start of service on Sunday, August 21 through end of service on Saturday, September 3, MAX Blue, Green and Red Lines will be disrupted and all MAX lines will have reduced frequency.

Three stations on NE Holladay will close and shuttle buses will run between Interstate/Rose Quarter and Lloyd Center/NE 11th Ave stations. Because of the location, length of the closure and sidewalk/crosswalk closures, the majority of riders will need to use the shuttle buses, which creates a bigger impact on them than during the 1st Avenue project in May. TriMet is adding a second shuttle bus operation between North Portland and the Portland airport. From Beaverton, Red Line trains will cross the Willamette River and serve the Interstate/Rose Quarter station before serving stations on the Yellow alignment. At Kenton/N Denver Ave Station, riders can transfer to a direct shuttle bus to the airport. The shuttles also run from the airport to Kenton for those heading to the west side from the airport. With tourism and Port of Portland employment an important part of the local economy, service planning staff worked diligently to determine the most reliable route for the shuttle service that will be consistent throughout the day. The agency asked for riders’ and Kenton neighbors’ patience as the agency provides this vital link during the two-week period.

At the Rose Quarter, just east of the MAX station, crews will replace switches and improve the track bed east. Rails into the old trolley barn will be removed and crews will re-align the rails running into the station. Crews also will upgrade the signal system servicing the transit center. This work will increase MAX reliability and help keep trains running on time. Crews have been working on portions of the project since the beginning of June, getting everything done that can be, before the significant service disruption is necessary. During the two-week disruption TriMet encourages riders to alter their trips to avoid the main commuting hours, use TriMet bus service or Portland Streetcar, work from home, carpool, bike or use other transportation.
